DBT Skills for Athletes: Improving the Mental Health and Performance of Athletes using a Skills Focused Approach

For therapists dedicated to enhancing athlete performance and mindset through innovative DBT techniques

Join this specialized training designed for therapists who work with athletes of all ages.

Learn how to effectively integrate DBT into your work with this population.

DBT skills have been successfully adapted for various mental health needs over the years—and now, lifelong athlete and DBT therapist, Alaina Cara, has tailored them specifically for athletes to help improve their mental health, performance and overall well being.

Who Should Attend?

  • Therapists: Suitable for all experience levels, though a basic understanding of DBT and its five skill sets is helpful.
  • Parents and coaches of youth athletes: Each module includes strategies for incorporating skills at home or during practice, making this training valuable to other adults in the young athlete’s life.

What You'll Learn:

Alaina will provide a detailed overview of how DBT skills have been adapted for athletes and how they differ from the traditional skill sets. You’ll gain:

  • Two brand-new DBT skills created by Alaina specifically for athletes, within the Distress Tolerance and Interpersonal Effectiveness modules.
  • A set of treatment targets tailored to athletes to guide therapists with case conceptualization.
  • Insight into common “Dialectical Dilemmas” that may hinder athletes’ ability to apply DBT skills effectively.
