DBT Is More Than Just Skills
Many people think that dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is only about skills training. However, DBT is a four-stage therapy model that goes beyond coping skills to help you build a life that is not only worth living but also worth loving.
A common misconception is that DBT is a “one-size-fits-all” approach. Instead, DBT is a stage-based roadmap for healing—customized to your unique needs. At DBT of South Jersey, we help clients in Voorhees, Moorestown, and across New Jersey move through each stage of DBT at their own pace, supported by a full team of trained therapists.
What Does Stage-Based DBT Mean?
DBT is a comprehensive approach to therapy with progressive stages that offer more than a temporary “band-aid.” While DBT skills training is essential, the real impact comes from how skills are integrated into each stage of treatment.
At DBT of South Jersey, our therapists help clients understand where they are in treatment and what comes next—whether in-person in Voorhees and Moorestown or virtually across New Jersey.

Stage One: From Crisis to Stability
The first stage of DBT focuses on gaining control over life-threatening and high-risk behaviors that interfere with daily life.
Stage One Goals:
- Reduce life-threatening behaviors (suicidal thinking, suicidal behavior, self-harm).
- Address therapy-interfering behaviors, such as:
- Missing or being late to sessions
- Skipping homework or diary cards
- Being disengaged in session
- Hiding or minimizing harmful behaviors
- Misusing phone coaching
Therapists can also unintentionally engage in therapy-interfering behaviors, such as frequent lateness, avoiding difficult conversations, or not participating in consultation teams.
At DBT of South Jersey, our therapists approach these challenges without judgment—using curiosity and collaboration to problem-solve so clients get the most out of treatment.
After addressing therapy-interfering behaviors, Stage One also targets quality-of-life interfering behaviors, such as substance use, disordered eating, impulsivity, avoidance, or chronic relationship struggles.
Treatment Components in Stage One:
- Skills Training Groups (distress tolerance, mindfulness, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness)
- Individual DBT Therapy (applying skills and addressing barriers)
- Phone Coaching (using skills in real-life, high-stress moments)
Many clients begin DBT during a crisis. Stage One provides the foundation for long-term stability and healing.

Stage Two: Addressing Trauma and Emotional Pain
Once you are more emotionally stable, DBT moves into Stage Two: addressing unresolved trauma and chronic emotional suffering.
Stage Two Goals:
- Process painful memories while maintaining emotional regulation.
- Reduce trauma symptoms (flashbacks, avoidance, hyperarousal).
- Build resilience and self-compassion.
At DBT of South Jersey, our therapists may incorporate evidence-based trauma therapies such as:
- Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
- Prolonged Exposure (PE)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Compassion-Focused Therapy
- Sensorimotor Therapy
Our goal is to help clients in South Jersey truly heal from trauma—not just suppress or manage it.
Stage Three: Building a Life Worth Living
Stage Three focuses on ordinary life problems, goals, and personal fulfillment.
Stage Three Goals:
- Strengthen relationships and communication skills
- Pursue career, school, or family goals
- Build self-confidence and independence
Move from surviving to thriving
At this stage, clients integrate DBT skills into daily life to create a sustainable, fulfilling lifestyle.
Stage Four: Deepening Meaning and Fulfillment
Stage Four is an advanced growth stage where clients focus on meaning, purpose, and self-actualization.
Stage Four Goals:
- Cultivate contentment and spiritual growth (if desired)
- Live in alignment with deepest values
- Strengthen connection with self and others
For many clients in South Jersey, this stage represents building a truly fulfilling life grounded in meaning and joy.

Why Skills Training Alone Isn’t Enough
While DBT skills training is powerful, skills alone cannot address trauma, accountability, or individualized problem-solving. Without the full DBT model, progress may stall.
DBT of South Jersey is unique:
- We are one of only two DBT-Linehan Board Certified Programs in New Jersey.
- We provide comprehensive DBT (skills group, individual therapy, phone coaching, and therapist consultation).
- You don’t just get one therapist—you get a full, supportive team.
