Does Online DBT Work? How Virtual DBT Works in New Jersey

DBT of South Jersey offers virtual DBT options for people who are physically in New Jersey during their sessions, including online DBT skills groups. Our group therapy page lists which groups currently meet online and which meet in person, and our Intake Coordinator can walk you through which parts of treatment can happen virtually for you.

For a lot of people, the closest real DBT program isn’t close at all. If you live in Sussex County, work long hours in Newark, or just can’t add a 40-minute drive to an already full week, searching for a DBT program in South Jersey can feel like a dead end. Online DBT can change that. Here’s what the research says about how well it works, and how to tell whether it fits you.

Who Can Do Online DBT With Us

Our therapists are licensed in New Jersey, and that license covers clients who are physically located in New Jersey at the time of each session. What counts is where you are during the session. A few examples:

  • You live in Hoboken, Toms River, or anywhere else in New Jersey: virtual options may work for you
  • You live in New Jersey but you’re on vacation out of state that week: talk with your therapist ahead of time, since that session may need to move
  • You live outside New Jersey: check our FAQ page for who we can see and how

What Online DBT Includes

DBT has the same parts whether you’re in the office or on a screen: individual therapy, a skills group, phone coaching between sessions, and a consultation team that supports your therapist. Online, that can look like:

  • A virtual DBT skills group, where you learn mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness with other people from across New Jersey
  • Phone coaching between sessions, which works the same way no matter where you see your therapist
  • Individual DBT therapy, where your Intake Coordinator can talk through current in-person and virtual options

Your therapist also meets weekly with our DBT consultation team, whether you’re in the office or on a screen. DBT of South Jersey is a DBT-Linehan Board Certified Program, one of two in New Jersey.

“What counts is where you’re sitting during the session.”

How Well Online DBT Works: What the Research Shows

The research on virtual DBT is newer and smaller than the research on DBT in the office. A 2022 study of a DBT-based intensive outpatient program found that people in Zoom groups improved in depression, anxiety, and stress about as much as people in in-person groups, with similar attendance (Bean et al., 2022). That study was small and not randomized. A 2025 pilot of a full year of telehealth DBT for adults found it acceptable and safe, though more people dropped out than in typical in-person trials, and the authors called for head-to-head studies (Vonderlin et al., 2025).

For many people, online DBT works well. Fit matters, and the next two sections can help you think about yours.

When Online DBT Tends to Be a Good Fit

  • You live too far from Voorhees or Moorestown to make weekly visits work
  • Your schedule leaves no room for a commute on top of a weekly group
  • Getting out the door is hard right now, and starting from home makes starting possible

When In-Person DBT Might Be the Better Choice

  • You don’t have a private place to talk at home
  • You’re looking for a teen or family group, since some of those meet in person
  • You notice you check out on video, or you need more structure than a screen gives you

Your therapist can help you decide, and some people mix the two, coming in person for some parts of treatment and joining others online.

Making Virtual Sessions Work

A few small things make a big difference. Find a private spot, even if it’s your parked car (never while driving). Use headphones so no one else in the house can hear. Keep your diary card and skills handouts within reach, and log in a few minutes early so tech problems don’t eat into your session.
